Challenge

As part of the Crossrail West Outer Track Infrastructure Works Project, the Crossrail Western Route section comprised infrastructure and station enhancements to the existing rail network. Network Rail were upgrading the Great Western Mainline between Maidenhead and Paddington to accommodate a new Crossrail service.

After successfully installing a 50m temporary bridge at the Stoke Poges section, Mabey’s Contracts team worked with Balfour Beatty Rail Limited to install a temporary 60m span 2 lane highway bridge with footwalks to maintain traffic flow during the reconstruction of the existing bridge. Cantilever footwalks were provided on both sides carrying pedestrians and services. The span and loadings dictated a double story triple panel construction known as TDRH3H, with the structure weighing 350te.

Solution

The Mabey Universal bridge structure was specially designed by Mabey’s engineers, it was built on rollers alongside the railway complete with “nose” and “tail” in the three weeks prior to the launch date. Our design, methodology and performance on site were intensely assessed by Balfour Beatty, Network Rail and Crossrail‘s design and health and safety teams, to ensure that world class safety standards were maintained during this complex operation.

The bridge was launched into position during a night time possession of just 4 hours which involved pushing the completed structure out across the railway using a 45 tonne D8 bulldozer. The rollers were then removed and the bridge jacked down into position. This structure will be in position for 32 weeks during the reconstruction of the existing permanent bridge.
