One of the biggest advantages contractors realize in choosing Mabey Inc. is the fact that Mabey carries a full range of products to handle almost any excavation shoring or structural shoring concern on the jobsite. And, because all products carry the Mabey brand, they work together in ways that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.
Finleyville, Pennsylvania contractor Alvarez Steel Erectors chose Mabey to aid them in a recent bridge construction, and found Mabey products to be the perfect set of solutions to a myriad of shoring challenges.Alvarez was chosen by general contractor Walsh Construction to perform flyover construction on the Mon Fayette Expressway through Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Doing so meant lending support to the flyover beams prior to encasing them in concrete. Alvarez worked with Mabey product specialist Jim Porreca and Mabey engineers to design a structural shoring system utilizing Mabey’s Mass 50 equipment. Known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and versatility, Mass 50 was chosen because it could easily be assembled, moved into place and – because each leg is capable of supporting up to 116,000 lbs. – trusted to support the full weight of the overpass girders. And, because all components are galvanized, there was no risk of rust staining any new concrete that would be poured.
After setting the flyover beams into place, they will be encased in concrete at the pier caps in a process known as post tensioning. At the bottom of those same piers, Mabey trench boxes were used as excavation shoring during pier install. Those trench boxes will be left in place to serve as concrete forms for the pier foundations. As Alvarez Steel Erectors and Walsh Construction found, although any given job may present a variety of challenges, Mabey can always be trusted as the single solution.
