Century Steel has begun construction on the roof of the new Consol Energy Center in Downtown Pittsburgh...with a big lift from Mabey.

 

With an opening planned for the fall of 2010, the new Consol Energy Center in Downtown Pittsburgh reached a major milestone recently, as roof construction for the 18,087 seat arena commenced. To facilitate installation, engineer Dick Ryabik, working with contractor Century Steel, turned to Baltimore-based Mabey Bridge & Shore, Inc. to provide the heavy equipment needed to support the roofing framework throughout its construction. Mabey product specialist Jim Porreca worked with Mabey engineers and Mr. Ryabik on a custom-engineered solution utilizing Mabey Universal (MU) Towers, a modular structural shoring system which will bear the weight of the building's trusses and allow for roof construction immediately above them. Without the use of Mabey equipment, Century Steel would need to custom-fabricate a propping solution themselves, wasting considerable time and money in the process. Fortunately, Mabey's MU towers support up to 385 kips per leg and can be mobilized and assembled quickly to accommodate jobs of almost any scope, without fabrication.

 

In total, there are two 110' towers, and two 120' towers on site. The latter towers are connected by an 80' bridge - 90' above the ground - allowing workers to cross freely between them and make any necessary welds, repairs or adjustments to the roof trusses. Mabey is also working with contractors PJ Dick and Hunt JV on the Consol Energy Center project and has other lighter-duty equipment solutions on-site lending support to the arena walls currently under construction. Because of their strength, versatility and ease of erection, Mabey's structural shoring systems have allowed the Consol Energy Center project to progress...and saved contractors time and money in the process.
